May 2, 2019 | By: T.E.P Studios
If you think choosing your outfit for a night out is tough, try choosing coordinating outfits for you and your man to wear on an engagement shoot! I know this is a stressful topic so I wanted to share some info that we have gathered over the years!! Below are 7 things to consider when you are deciding what to wear!!
What Season Did You Choose?
The season that you choose for your engagement session plays the biggest role when picking out your outfits! If you love wearing cute summer dress and flowing fabrics, then you definitely need to do a summer engagement. If you love cozy layers then a fall or winter season might be right for you! Here are some examples of season appropriate wear!
Summer - bright colors, shorter hemlines, breathable fabrics, and flats or barefoot.
Fall - fall color palette, longer sleeves, layers, and knits.
Spring - pretty pastels, florals, lightweight sweaters over a dress or skirt.
Still not sure what season is for you? Check out this blog post for a little more help!
Where Will Your Session Be?
The location you choose is also an important factor in picking the right outfits. Here are some things to consider:
Urban locations, such as in a downtown area, are a great place to wear more formal looks. (Look at the very last picture on this post!)
Do you prefer a natural setting, like a park or field? Simple dresses or casual outfits look amazing in these locations! Think eyelet lace or simple designs.
Did you choose the beach? Barefoot and flowing fabrics look perfect on a beach setting.
Ok, so take a look at the couples below. We have two different seasons shown, summer and winter. Andrea looks amazing in her bright, orange summer dress. The color and cut are perfect for summer and pops against the summer field!
Courtney & Matthew are all cozy and layered for their urban, winter engagement session.
Brittney & Shawn, also chose a summer engagement. But they went with very soft, pastel colors. I love the fabric choice because you definitely get a summer vibe!
What Do You Like To Wear?
One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to wear what you feel comfortable in! By this, I mean wear what feels the most like you, not comfortable as in a sweatshirt and yoga pants. When you feel confident and comfortable in what you are wearing, it really shows in your photographs.
If you never wear dresses and heels, your engagement session is probably not the best place to wear them for the first time.
Think of your fiancé too! If he is not normally the suit-wearing type, find something that fits into the style he normally wears.
Remember, just be YOU!!
Do You Know Your Body Type?
Did you know that there are four basic body types? Depending on which one you are, there are certain styles that will look the best on you! The four types are listed below!

Do Your Outfits Compliment Each Other?
It is best to have your outfits compliment each other without being to matchy, matchy. If you both wear the exact same colors, everything tends to blend together in the photograph.
Pick a color palette and then choose two focal colors and keep the rest of your outfit in the neutral tones.
If you choose a pattern for one of your outfits, just have the other person wear a solid in the same tones.

Are You Classic, Trendy or Both?
Many fashion experts will say that your wardrobe should be made up of 70% classic pieces and 30% trendy. This is how you should approach your outfits as well! Here are some tips:
Use a maximum of two statement or trendy pieces in each outfit. (If you wear cute, trendy jeans just pair it with a classic top)
Again, neutrals save the day!! Pair them with the statement or trendy piece to create a more timeless, classic look.
Classic styles stand the test of time. These typically are in the black, brown and tan tones.
What About Accessories?
Last but not least is your accessories! This is a great way to bring in some personality and pops of color.
Think standout jewelry pieces, a fun scarf or amazing, colored heels.
When choosing accessory pieces make sure to keep in mind that they should compliment the outfits & color palette but not take center stage.
Another thing to remember, if accessories are not your thing, don't force it!
Let's look at our couples!! Kelsey and Dan did a perfect job of choosing complimentary outfits that were not too matchy. I love that Dan is in a pattern and Kelsey took a color from that pattern and wore it in a solid color! It looks so put together! And Kelsey chose a great necklace to accessorize:)
Fallon & Parris look so classic but they also have a modern, trendy feel! Fallon has on a classic, white blouse paired with modern jeans. Parris has on a neutral sports coat but his tie and pocket square are fun accessories that show his awesome personality!
Q & Lauren are a perfect combo! Lauren looks trendy in her bright, little dress and Q choose classic colors with his signature bowtie. I love how the outfits look together, a perfect blend!
